Chapter 70: I Truly Love Anan
Xu An’an retreated warily. “What are you trying to do?”
Only then did she realize that there were just the two of them here, herself and Tang Jin. No wonder Tang Jin had dropped the gentlemanly act and become so aggressive, as if he meant to devour her whole.
Tang Jin adjusted the gold-rimmed glasses on his nose, a half-smile playing on his lips. “Honestly, you don’t need to resort to such tricks to get my attention.”
It was as if she’d heard an absurd tale; Xu An’an’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“Are you insane? If there’s no mirror, surely you have some water to see your reflection? Look at how sleazy you look right now. If I feel sick just seeing you, even passing dogs would lose their appetite.”
“Two-faced, aren’t you? Does President Xue know what you’re really like?”
Mentioning Xue Shengnan, Tang Jin showed no fear whatsoever.
Instead, he sneered at Xu An’an, “What do you think? I’m the man who’ll spend his life with her. You’re merely her subordinate.
Anyone with half a brain can tell who matters more.”
Thinking about Xue Shengnan’s attitude toward Tang Jin, Xu An’an didn’t dare to gamble. She kept her expression cold. “No matter how well you pretend, you’ll show your true colors one day.”
Tang Jin, however, was oddly confident. “That day will never come.”
“Because I truly love Shengnan.”
With those words, he walked toward Xu An’an with tenderness in his eyes, but merely brushed past her, heading straight for Xue Shengnan, who had just come out.
Xue Shengnan noticed both Xu An’an and Tang Jin were still there. It made no sense to linger, so she paid the bill and prepared to leave.
She was surprised. “Why are you two still here?”
She hadn’t caught the earlier conversation, only Tang Jin’s declaration of love. It made her heart flutter with sweetness.
Such acting—truly masterful!
Xu An’an rolled her eyes inwardly, turned, and smiled. “The car I ordered ran into trouble on the road. I’m waiting for another.”
“So am I,” Tang Jin added. “My car broke down, so I told my friend to handle it himself.”
Xue Shengnan looked troubled. “But my car only has two seats.”
Xu An’an was quick-witted. “It’s fine. My car should be here soon. You two go ahead.”
Tang Jin slipped an arm around Xue Shengnan’s shoulders. “I’ll come over to your place tonight.”
And so, the pair left together in sweet harmony.
If she could, Xu An’an would have liked to run Tang Jin over. She’d met plenty of shameless women, but never a man quite so brazen.
He really was a match for Ning Xiyue!
……
Because of Tang Jin, Xu An’an barely slept that night. She wanted to expose his true nature, to keep Xue Shengnan from being deceived.
Her thoughts turned to the investment documents.
Perhaps this was the breakthrough she needed. She doubted Tang Jin genuinely wanted to help them make money.
If it wasn’t about making money, it must be a scam.
Xu An’an’s first impulse was to seek out Jiang Li, but she reconsidered and instead arranged to meet Gu Yang, confiding in him about the situation.
“Take a look at these documents first.”
Gu Yang took them and flipped through casually, his brows knitting ever tighter. “Who gave you these? Don’t believe them. This is a scam.”
Xu An’an had expected as much.
Still, having only the documents wasn’t enough. Tang Jin could easily claim they’d come from someone else; there was no proof they originated with him.
“They’re from my friend’s fiancé.”
“But my friend is about to get engaged. I have to find a way to make her see his true nature.”
They say a woman’s greatest fear is marrying the wrong man. She sincerely hoped Xue Shengnan wouldn’t make that mistake.
Gu Yang urged Xu An’an not to panic.
“I have several friends in finance. Let me ask if any of them know Tang Jin. If they do, it’ll be much easier to handle.”
Unfortunately, Gu Yang’s friends didn’t know Tang Jin.
After all, they were all elite professionals in the financial sector—how would they know some nobody?
Still, they promised to help look into it.
“From your description, I suspect your friend is being emotionally manipulated. According to studies, many older women, while pursuing their careers, sometimes long for pure love, which gives certain unscrupulous men an opportunity.”
“They first present their best side, constantly proclaiming their loyalty, luring their prey step by step into a trap.”
Xu An’an had even heard of places that trained men specifically to manipulate women.
A chill crept up her spine.
Beneath a seemingly perfect exterior, who could tell how filthy things really were?
Ring, ring, ring!
Gu Yang thought it was one of his friends returning his call, but it was the butler phoning with urgent news—the old master had suddenly collapsed and needed him back at once.
Learning that his grandfather was in trouble, Gu Yang became anxious.
He hurriedly explained to Xu An’an, then strode out, nearly bumping into several passersby.
Xu An’an quickly followed. “Wait, I’ll go with you.”
She snatched Gu Yang’s car keys, feeling he was in no state to drive and might cause an accident—and she wanted to check on Old Gu as well.
Fortunately, there was no traffic; they reached the manor swiftly.
“Butler, how is Grandfather?” Gu Yang rushed into the villa, asking the butler waiting at the door.
The butler hurried after him. “The doctor said it was an old ailment flaring up.”
Gu Yang’s brows furrowed deeper. “But Grandfather’s old illness hasn’t acted up in ages. Why now?”
“He was fine all morning, but wanted to take a walk in the back hills. Then a rabbit suddenly jumped out, and he wanted to tease it. Then…”
The butler’s voice trailed off, regretful he hadn’t stopped him. “But the old master really likes that rabbit. Before he fainted, he asked us to catch it for him.”
“So far, we haven’t managed to catch the rabbit.”
Learning that his grandfather’s illness had been triggered by this, Gu Yang felt both angry and amused. “What kind of rabbit is it that it must be caught? Why not just buy one?”
The butler smiled wryly. “We thought of that, but this rabbit is special—there’s a tuft of pink fur on its right ear.”
Hearing this, Xu An’an recalled she might have seen it nearby, around the manor.
“If Grandfather likes it, why don’t we go look for it?”
“It seems quite tame, often wandering around here.”
Gu Yang thought for a moment and agreed to Xu An’an’s suggestion, but first he checked on his grandfather before taking her out to search for the rabbit.
There was still plenty of daylight, but in another hour it would be dark.
So they decided to look for an hour.
If they couldn’t find it, they’d try again tomorrow.
It was Xu An’an’s first time searching for a rabbit like this, and she found it quite novel. She had never explored the woods behind the manor before.
Gu Yang cautioned her to watch her step.
He teased, “If you’re not careful, you might fall into a trap.”
No sooner had he spoken than Xu An’an suddenly stepped into thin air, losing her balance and plunging downward.
“Ah!!”
