Chapter 103: You're Quite Easy to Take Care Of
An An Xu was afraid of being discovered, so she hurriedly turned and walked away, but was still spotted by Jiang Li as he came out. She recalled what Assistant Wang had said and turned her face aside.
She spoke softly, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop.”
“Didn’t you hurt your foot? Why are you wandering around?” Jiang Li sighed lightly, sounding helpless. He walked over and picked An An Xu up in his arms. “Assistant Wang, ask someone to hurry up and bring the food.”
After Assistant Wang left, An An Xu struggled to get down.
“I can do it myself.”
“I’m not as fragile as you think.”
Jiang Li ignored her protests and kept walking, weighing her in his arms. “So light, it’s as if I’m not holding anything. Eat more later.”
He placed her on the sofa and pulled the table over. “Sit tight, the food will be here soon.”
Feeling as if Jiang Li was treating her like a child, An An Xu’s feelings were mixed. She wished Jiang Li wouldn’t be so kind to her—she’d rather he treated her as impassively as when they first met.
Jiang Li sensed her mood wasn’t right and was about to ask when Assistant Wang brought dinner.
“Eat first.”
The delicious aroma of food filled the air, and for the moment, An An Xu pushed aside her tangled thoughts to focus on enjoying the meal.
Jiang Li raised an eyebrow, thinking her silence was simply due to hunger.
He picked up a piece of succulent, fragrant pork belly and placed it in her bowl.
“I don’t want it,” An An Xu moved her bowl away, though she really did want to eat. She just didn’t want anything Jiang Li gave her. “Besides, I can get my own.”
Jiang Li was puzzled. “What’s wrong?”
An An Xu muttered, “I’m not a child. Just eat your own food.”
“Fine.”
Jiang Li stopped picking food for her, eating a couple bites himself before putting down his chopsticks and staring at An An Xu thoughtfully.
Ring ring ring!
Just as An An Xu was about to ask Jiang Li to stop looking at her, his phone rang. It was Old Master Jiang calling. Jiang Li casually swiped the screen and put it on speaker.
Seeing that Jiang Li didn’t avoid her presence, An An Xu’s feelings grew complicated again.
Wasn’t he afraid she’d overhear something she shouldn’t?
“Li, where are you?” Old Master Jiang’s voice was as stern as ever, but with a trace of affection. “Your grandmother is returning to the country tomorrow. Come with me to pick her up.”
An An Xu was surprised. She had heard of Jiang Li’s grandmother, who, not long after Jiang Li returned to the Jiang family, chose to retire in M Country.
Sometimes she would see news from over there, learning that the old lady’s life was nothing short of colorful.
Not only did she frequent nightclubs, she also hired over a dozen male models to accompany her.
If she behaved like that in the country, it would never be allowed, so the grand old lady simply liberated herself abroad.
Now, for Jiang Li’s marriage, she was giving up everything abroad to return home.
She truly cared deeply for Jiang Li.
Surely, out of filial duty, Jiang Li would accept whatever arrangement was made for him?
An An Xu’s mind wandered, drifting through space. She didn’t notice Jiang Li across from her, staring.
When she came back to herself, Jiang Li had already hung up and was looking straight at her.
Her cheeks grew warm.
“Why are you staring at me?”
“You’re eating but not touching the dishes?” Jiang Li raised an amused eyebrow. “You’re easy to feed.”
An An Xu glared at him, then began piling her bowl high with vegetables until it resembled a small mountain. “I eat only vegetables. I’m hard to feed.”
Jiang Li tapped his chin, his handsome, sharp-featured face lit with a teasing smile, a hint of insouciance in his eyes.
“No matter. Even if you spend a million a day, it’s a trivial matter to me.”
An An Xu paused, muttering under her breath, “What does it have to do with you?”
…
Because Madam Jiang was returning home, Old Master Jiang specially arranged a banquet, inviting all the prominent families to gather—his true intention being to select a match for Jiang Li.
The previous matchmaking banquet had been grand, known to all, but ultimately came to nothing.
Old Master Jiang thought to let things be, but Madam Jiang insisted on intervening.
As in-laws, the Xu family was naturally invited.
For tonight, Xu Wanwan spent several million yuan on an extravagant evening gown and brought out Shen Ying’s treasured ruby jewelry.
She was determined to be the most dazzling guest.
“Mom, mom?”
Shen Ying’s complexion was pale. She prescribed herself medicine, but after drinking it for some time, saw no improvement.
She lay weakly on the bed.
Xu Wanwan kept fussing, making her head ache. “What is it now?”
Seeing her mother still in bed, Xu Wanwan was furious. “Mom, we’re about to leave. How can you still be lying down? I’m counting on you tonight to talk to Madam Jiang for me!”
The Xu family wasn’t exactly a major clan, but Shen Ying’s medical skills and social graces had earned her connections among many noble ladies.
“Don’t you want me to marry Second Master?”
“Fine, you go out first,” Shen Ying had no choice but to take her medicine, which would let her stay alert for a while.
All of this was overheard by An An Xu, who stood outside.
She didn’t care about any of it, but her father insisted she attend tonight’s banquet and accompany Jiang Yu.
If An An Xu truly didn’t want to go, she could refuse—after all, the Xu family no longer had any leverage over her—but curiosity got the better of her.
She wondered what kind of match Madam Jiang would choose for Jiang Li.
Soon, Xu Wanwan and Shen Ying came downstairs and saw An An Xu sitting there drinking tea, which made them furious.
“Well, An An Xu, you actually dare come back!”
Xu Wanwan was about to explode, but Shen Ying held her back. “Time is tight, let’s go now. It wouldn’t do to be late.”
Ultimately, the banquet mattered more, so Xu Wanwan reluctantly swallowed her anger.
But when she saw An An Xu getting into the same car as them, her fury rose again. An An Xu didn’t even look at them, simply taking her seat first.
An An Xu sat in the front passenger seat, unwilling to be squeezed in with the mother and daughter.
Xu Wanwan snorted, warning her repeatedly, “An An Xu, don’t say I didn’t warn you. You’re already a married woman. If you dare seduce Second Master tonight, I’ll expose you on the spot, so you won’t even have the chance to marry Young Master Jiang!”
An An Xu closed her eyes in leisure.
“Not listening, not listening, like a turtle chanting sutras.”
“You—!”
“Enough, quiet,” Shen Ying interjected, her head pounding from Xu Wanwan’s endless nagging.
An An Xu glanced at Shen Ying in the rearview mirror, surprised to see how bad she looked and recalling how Shen Ying had been taking medicine earlier.
She felt a surge of satisfaction.
Why should her own mother lie unconscious in a hospital, suffering worse than death, while Shen Ying went unscathed? Shen Ying deserved to taste illness herself.
With any luck, she’d never recover.
Soon, they arrived at the banquet venue.
As An An Xu stepped out of the car, a long Lincoln limousine pulled up. The door opened, revealing a pair of dazzling legs.
Someone exclaimed, “Oh my god, Murong Yan is really here!”
