Chapter 37: Go for it, Brother-in-law 14
Before long, Elsa’s maid ran into trouble. Having failed to flirt with Slan but having managed to harass him a little, Elsa felt she had a measure of him and finally remembered her accompanying maid. The trunks she had brought were still sitting in the room, unpacked.
She called out several times and even shouted out the window, but the maid did not appear. Instead, her commotion disturbed Slan and the others. Slan used a tracking spell; he took a piece of paper, wrote the maid’s name on it, and folded it into the shape of a bird. Once released, the paper bird took flight.
The paper bird flew straight out the window. Xining was once again stunned; what a flashy, impressive move! Slan, Maria, and Yeyu possessed magic, and by holding their staffs, they could use the power within them to fly. Xining, however, could not. Even if she ran outside, it was raining. Although the garden paths were mostly flagstone—meaning she wouldn't be trudging through mud—her clothes would certainly get soaked. By the time she managed to run there, the matter would likely be over. Xining could only sharpen her claws and stay obediently in the room.
Before long, the three returned. Yeyu was dragging the unconscious maid along, suspended in the air. Despite the torrential downpour outside, the three of them were completely dry—another display of flashy magical maneuvering. With a wave of his hand, Slan instantly dried the maid’s soaked clothing. Xining felt such an itch of frustration she wanted to scratch something. It was so infuriating, so helpless; if only the original host had known magic, she could at least play around with it.
They had found the maid in the garden; she had likely been picking flowers to decorate the room, but the rain had made the path slippery, and she had taken a clumsy fall. Hitting her head in the process, she had passed out. Although Elsa used magic to wake her, the maid seemed to be suffering from intermittent amnesia; she had forgotten why she went to the garden, remembering only that she had a bouquet of freshly picked roses in her hand. Not only was her head injured, but she had also twisted her ankle. Seeing how badly it had swollen, magic could only provide temporary relief; she would have to go back to recuperate.
Elsa was immediately annoyed. "Why were you picking flowers? You know I don't like roses."
Xining glanced at her sideways, thinking, *The climbing rose is the emblem of the Pomfret family; you don't have to hate the flower just because you hate the person.*
The maid was sent back, and they had to make do with a maid from the Gamio estate instead. She looked much like Molly—not particularly striking in appearance, but well-trained, humble, and polite. Most importantly, when Elsa tried to harass Slan, this maid wouldn't just walk away like Elsa's previous one had. Elsa forced a smile and thanked Slan for the arrangement.
Slan apologized for the accident that had occurred at the Gamio estate. Elsa hurried to deflect, insisting it was the maid’s own fault and not Slan’s doing. Slan apologized again, saying that since the incident occurred on his grounds, he bore responsibility. The two went back and forth with endless thanks and apologies. Xining looked at Yeyu, who was standing to the side, hugging his staff and smiling silently. Could this guy be the one behind it all?
In the afternoon, the nobility had a habit of taking naps. Even while just trying to sleep, Elsa managed to stir up trouble.
"Ah! A mouse! A mouse!" Elsa’s voice was so high-pitched and powerful it could have shattered glass. At the sound of her scream, Slan and Yeyu arrived on the scene instantly. By the time Xining ran over, she saw Elsa, dressed in a bright red, spaghetti-strap mini-dress, throwing herself into Slan’s arms, sobbing.
"It’s so scary, a mouse, a mouse..." Even the word "mouse" was delivered with a drunken, nasal whine.
She couldn't believe this world had spaghetti-strap mini-dresses. With Elsa wearing so little, large patches of skin were exposed. The bright red fabric contrasted with her snow-white skin, creating quite a visual impact. Having learned his lesson, Slan didn't dare hold her, but he couldn't bring himself to push her away either. Holding his staff in one hand and keeping the other slightly raised, his handsome face twisted into a miserable grimace. He could only offer comfort: "There are no more mice, don't be afraid!"
At this moment, Elsa’s voice was sweet, soft, and pitifully seductive: "Cousin, I'm scared~"
Xining rolled her eyes. *Should I go sleep with you so you won't be scared?*
*Tch.* Who knows if there even was a mouse? Even if there wasn't, Elsa was a mid-to-high-level mage; it wouldn't be hard for her to summon one using magic.
"I'm scared, I'm most afraid of mice!" Elsa’s voice was so sugary and coquettish, calculated to make any man feel protective. As she clung to Slan’s broad body, she rubbed her prominent chest against him persistently.
Seeing Su Yun approaching, Slan felt even more embarrassed and anxious. The first time, Su Yun had been understanding, but this was the second time. By the third time, no matter how good-natured she was, she would start to have a low opinion of him.
Xining didn't get too close. Seeing the situation, she stood five meters away, arms crossed over her chest, watching coldly. With her brother right there and the maid nearby, Elsa was still dressing so scantily and flirting so openly. Elsa’s face was thicker than standard—it was practically double-layered, reinforced stainless steel.
Seeing Su Yun’s face darken with contempt, Slan panicked. He remembered Su Yun saying that for shameless people like this, one should just blast them away. If you can't blast them away, knock them out!
Slan had no choice but to bite the bullet. His hand, adorned with a magic ring, secretly made a circle behind Elsa’s head. Elsa suddenly felt her eyelids grow heavy and closed them involuntarily, her shapely figure sliding downward.
Slan quickly used magic to levitate her and move her onto the bed. Once Elsa was on the bed, the maid hurried over to cover her with the quilt.
*Hmm, not bad! He knows how to refuse now. It seems he still cares about the original host’s sister.*
Xining’s expression finally softened. A faint smile touched her lips as she feigned concern: "Please tuck Miss Elsa in tightly; she’s wearing so little, she’ll easily catch a cold."
Yeyu, who had been leaning against the wall the whole time, hugging his staff and watching from the sidelines, smiled knowingly.
"Miss Su Yun!" Slan didn't know what to say.
Xining raised an eyebrow: "The mouse is right there. Hurry up and catch it."
She then walked slowly closer, leaning in toward Slan, tilting her head up due to the height difference. With an innocent and guileless face, she mimicked Elsa’s drawn-out, cooing tone: "Brother-in-law, I'm scared of mice too~"
Facing this harmless little face, Slan was speechless, unsure how to respond. Beside them, Yeyu couldn't help but grin.
Xining stepped back two paces to a distance that felt safe and comfortable for the others. She looked at Slan and Yeyu; both were wearing simple black robes and were barefoot. They had been on the verge of sleep and had rushed over without even putting on their shoes. It seemed they both slept in robes. Xining also slept in a robe, as it was the only clothing she currently possessed; the clothes she had worn yesterday were already washed, and with the rain, it would take two days for them to dry.
She sighed slightly: "It's fortunate Miss Elsa was still wearing something while sleeping. If she liked to sleep naked, I don't know what would happen... you two are actually wearing more than she is."
Back in her room, Xining lay on the bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. Her nap was ruined. She gritted her teeth, feeling like she could chew through a handkerchief. *Damn Elsa, daring to seduce the original host’s good brother-in-law. I must tear this little bitch apart!*
