Chapter 64: The Challenge!
“Vice President Fang, how could you agree to his bet? There are regulations from above; outsiders can't become adventurers.” The red-medal adventurer leaned in, whispering anxiously, his expression grim.
“Yes, Vice President Fang, what if the higher-ups blame us…” The orange-medal adventurer cautioned.
Fang Zhong seemed not to hear them, his gaze fixed on the distant figure. His agreement earlier was spoken in the heat of the moment; he didn’t believe the man could succeed. Yet, witnessing his unmatched speed, Fang Zhong felt a sudden tremor in his heart, a faint sense of foreboding.
If he truly completes the task, then I…
No, impossible!
Fang Zhong shook his head sharply, muttering under his breath, “I refuse to believe you can succeed! The wolf pack is so fierce that only elite military units could accomplish this. You may be strong, but how can you compare to a well-trained squad?”
He gave a cold laugh, seemingly convincing himself. “Hmph, he won’t complete the task. What harm is there in agreeing? When the time comes, it will only make him look more ridiculous and disappointed!” With a sneer, Fang Zhong strode up into the vehicle.
The adventurers exchanged glances, finding his reasoning sound.
Meanwhile, Li Xin headed straight for the school and fulfilled Natasha’s entrusted task.
Ding!
Task completed.
“Reward: 200 merit points, 35 combat points.”
“Reward: 1 map of Santiago.”
Li Xin breathed a sigh of relief, though a hint of disappointment lingered—this time, he hadn’t triggered the friendliness bonus. Still, it was a minor task, and he was satisfied enough. With a map, he could avoid many unnecessary detours.
The city of Santiago was vast, three times larger than his previous home of Santo City. As long as one searched carefully, countless tasks could be found within its bounds. But Li Xin now had two major missions to focus on, leaving little time for anything else. He resolved to explore the city thoroughly after completing these, increasing his combat power to better protect himself while undercover.
He flagged down several taxis in succession, but none were willing to venture into the outskirts—wolves were notorious for their ferocity. Left with no choice, Li Xin offered triple the fare.
Generous reward always attracts a brave soul, but even this hero only drove him to the edge of town, then hastily turned back to the city.
A wolf pack—where was it?
Li Xin searched for a long time but found no trace. He stood atop a hill, gazing into the distance.
A kilometer away, at the edge of the grasslands, a cluster of nomad tents could be seen.
Currently, Li Xin’s “King of Games” speed attribute stood at 50 points.
A normal person’s running speed is 6-10 meters per second, though most only reach 8 m/s. Professional sprinters can surpass 9 m/s, sometimes even breaking the 10 m/s barrier. In theory, if speed is sustained, a human could run 30 kilometers in an hour, but stamina falls short; 15 kilometers in an hour is already extraordinary.
After much experience with “King of Games,” Li Xin had compared and analyzed many times, finally mapping the game’s attribute points to his real-world speed.
There was also duration to consider.
This was a discovery he made unexpectedly while playing CF. With a speed attribute of 30 points, his maximum speed was 7 m/s, lasting 100 seconds. Every 10 points added increased speed by 1 m/s and duration by 10 seconds. Now, with 60 points, he could reach 10 m/s for 120 seconds—two minutes.
As a former top champion professional gamer, his command of data was precise. He believed only such rigor could prepare him for any situation. He’d once locked himself in a sealed room, training his reaction speed based on 0.1 seconds increments. When he finally emerged, he was disheveled, nearly mistaken for a madman.
He easily ran to the nomad camp and began asking the herders about the whereabouts of the wolf pack.
What?
Several herders gasped in shock, staring at him as if he were insane, unable to comprehend his words.
One man alone, daring to challenge a wolf pack—wasn’t that courting death?
“Young man, you’d best return. The wolves are fierce,” an elder advised kindly. Though the boy was ambitious, he spoke courteously, so the old man couldn’t bring himself to be harsh.
Li Xin smiled wryly. If only one or two said so, he might not believe them, but everyone’s warning proved the wolves’ reputation. Just as he was about to ask further, a sudden loud bang echoed in the distance as a red signal flare shot into the clouds, exploding in a dazzling burst.
“What happened, uncle?”
“Oh no, that’s the sign the wolf pack has appeared. You—you must leave now, or it’ll be too late.” The old man’s face changed, urging him as he and the herders hurried about.
When wolves attack, all livestock must be gathered swiftly, and offerings carefully arranged around the pasture’s edge. Once the wolves have feasted, they will leave. This ancient custom remained unchanged, despite modern technology.
Howls echoed, growing closer.
Dust swirled, like a sandstorm.
Some rejoiced, others despaired.
Within three minutes, the wolves appeared in droves, baring their teeth, eyes fierce. The herders hadn’t managed to gather all their cattle and sheep yet. The outcome was clear—they would suffer.
Swish!
A figure darted through the wind, racing toward the wolf pack.
The sweating, busy herders glimpsed the shadow, their faces paling as they shouted.
“Come back, quickly! Don’t go courting death!”
“Don’t be foolish, come back!”
But the figure moved too fast, his resolve set, already nearing the wolves. The herders sighed, hearts heavy with sorrow. Such a promising life, about to be lost.
“Stop staring, hurry and gather the livestock!” the elder shouted. The others snapped back to work, but their thoughts remained fixed on that bright, spirited young man.
“Qiankun!”
Li Xin muttered, and suddenly a Nepalese army knife, half a meter long, appeared in his hand. Anyone present would have been stunned, for a normal army knife was only one foot in length!
Li Xin had wanted to use the Reaper’s Scythe—it looked intimidating, its blade long, perfect for making a mark on the wolf clan. But he hadn’t completed the Death Warrior mission yet, so the scythe was still cooling down.
Awoooo~~~~
Seeing someone dare to challenge them, the wolves, led by their alpha, halted abruptly and howled skyward. The sound was thunderous, echoing loudly.
The next second, the wolves dispersed, forming a circle and closing in on Li Xin.
“Amitabha, to take life is wrong. I ask Buddha’s forgiveness!” Li Xin recited quickly, brandishing his knife as his legs exploded into motion, launching himself forward.
He wanted to test whether he could slaughter the pack within these 120 seconds.
This was his challenge to himself!
