Chapter 130: Pride Comes Before a Fall
“Both teams, take your positions. The match is about to begin!”
Only after the referee’s repeated reminders did Tylong recover from his dazed shock. He hurried to one side of the arena and stood ready, but not a trace of his earlier imposing presence remained.
“First Soul Skill: Rock-Solid Defense!”
“Third Soul Skill: Demon Ape Golden Body!”
Having regained his senses, Tylong still followed the plan. He immediately activated his two enhancement skills, pushing his physical strength to its maximum.
Before the match, Grandmaster Yu Xiaogang had given Tylong a single-word strategy:
“Endure!”
He was to rely on the powerful defense and strength of the Mighty Gorilla spirit to withstand the opponent’s soul-skill attacks and drag out the battle until the opponent’s soul power was exhausted.
It could not be said that this was a bad plan. As a pure strength-type defensive soul master, Tylong did, in a certain sense, counter agility-type soul masters who excelled at speed. But that strategy had one crucial prerequisite: the two sides had to be on roughly equal footing.
Xie Wu’s soul power had reached Rank Forty-Seven, while Tylong was only Rank Thirty-Eight. In the face of absolute strength, every tactic lost its meaning.
Once he realized that the opponent’s soul power far surpassed Tylong’s, Tang San had actually wanted Tylong to abandon the original strategy. But Tylong had already entered the arena, and if Tang San spoke then, it would count as outside assistance. All he could do was hope that Tylong would adapt to the situation.
He never expected Tylong to be such a stubborn blockhead. Facing Xie Wu, whose strength far exceeded his own, he still chose to endure the attacks head-on. After taking several vicious kicks from Xie Wu, he staggered backward again and again before tumbling out of the arena.
After Tylong was eliminated, Zhu Zhuqing was the next to enter.
Without the immortal herb, Zhu Zhuqing had likewise failed to break through to the Soul Ancestor realm. Her cultivation was roughly on par with Tylong’s, her soul power lying somewhere between Rank Thirty-Seven and Rank Thirty-Eight. As the least gifted of the Shrek Seven Monsters, she possessed barely more than seven ranks of innate soul power. To reach this level at the age of fourteen, the sweat and hardship she had endured could easily be imagined.
Facing an opponent far stronger than herself, Zhu Zhuqing also refused to give up. She exerted herself to the fullest, summoned the Netherworld Spirit Cat to possess her body, and unleashed her speed to its utmost limit. Even if she could not defeat her opponent, she would do everything in her power to consume as much of his soul power as possible.
Unfortunately, her opponent, Xie Wu, also possessed the ability to fly.
Confronted with Zhu Zhuqing’s ever-changing attacks, Xie Wu used his third soul skill and flew straight into the air.
“Zhu Zhuqing is finished!”
In the spectator stands, even Ning Fengzhi, Snow Night, and Salas on the chairman’s platform came to the same conclusion almost simultaneously when they saw Xie Wu soar into the sky on a pair of wings.
As an agility-type soul master, all three of Zhu Zhuqing’s soul skills enhanced her speed and close-combat ability. She had no way to attack Xie Wu, while Xie Wu could strike at her whenever he pleased.
“What a despicable move!”
In the Shrek viewing area, Tang San said bitterly, “His soul power is clearly far above Zhu Zhuqing’s, yet he still doesn’t dare face her directly. He’s using such a contemptible method to exhaust her soul power. Even if he wins, is there anything glorious about it?”
The teacher from the neighboring academy heard Tang San’s astonishing remarks and merely lowered his eyes, refusing to pay him any attention. After all, his teacher’s values were already like this. They were no longer surprised when the students made such brainless statements.
“Second Soul Skill: Meteor Flying Kick!”
On the field, after several harassing attacks from Xie Wu, Zhu Zhuqing’s soul power was soon depleted.
Seizing his opportunity, Xie Wu unleashed his second soul skill. With a flying kick, he sent Zhu Zhuqing out of the arena.
Xie Wu clearly possessed some consideration for the fairer sex. He had obviously held back with that kick, sending Zhu Zhuqing flying beyond the boundary without actually injuring her.
Knowing that her opponent had shown mercy, Zhu Zhuqing nodded toward Xie Wu, accepting the favor.
“Little San, you’re the only one left!”
Now that it was finally time for his beloved disciple to enter the arena, Yu Xiaogang at last stopped hiding like an ostrich. He stood up and said to Tang San, “We have very little chance of winning this match. Why not give up? That way, we can preserve our strength for the next round!”
Flander also agreed with Yu Xiaogang. “Little San, none of our opponents in the next few rounds will be weak. Mubai and Hongjun are both seriously injured, and neither of them will be able to compete tomorrow or the day after. Right now, you’re the only healthy fighter on the team. We’ll have to rely on you for the matches ahead!”
Liu Erlong was no different from Yu Xiaogang’s devoted attachment. At this moment, she merely nodded. No matter how absurd or contrary to common sense Yu Xiaogang’s words might be, she would always find them reasonable.
“No, Teacher, Dean. I want to try!”
Tang San’s gaze was resolute as he stubbornly shook his head. “I will never give up before the very last moment!”
Put nicely, Tang San’s behavior could be called refusing to admit defeat. Put less kindly, he was simply too proud to spare himself unnecessary suffering.
If the opposing side had only Xie Wu left, then even though Xie Wu’s soul power was roughly five ranks higher than Tang San’s, Tang San truly should not give up.
But aside from Xie Wu, the opposing team still had five fresh fighters who had yet to enter the arena. Among them was even one whose attributes clearly countered Tang San’s.
