Chapter 39: Let’s Make Money Together, Don’t Be Selfish
Li Xingyue drove the truck out of Freedom City. Two minutes later, he saw through the rearview mirror that a constant stream of vehicles was pouring out of the city gates, all heading in his direction.
Li Xingyue let out an involuntary, cold sneer. "Heh, I was just worried you wouldn't follow."
"Guiye, help me ambush a batch of low-level zombies around the shopping mall later."
Guiye closed the comic book in his hand and glanced back through the side mirror. "Brother, you intend to wipe them all out, right? Just give me five minutes."
Li Xingyue’s tone was slightly helpless. "Little brother, you’re an eighth-tier zombie king now. Don’t always do everything yourself; these are just first or second-tier trash, not worth your effort."
"Hmm, alright."
Guiye agreed, closed his eyes, and after a few seconds, opened them slowly before returning to his comic book.
About an hour later, the vehicle reached the outskirts of Starsea City.
Li Xingyue used the communicator to tell the other four to drive directly to the mall entrance. He checked the rearview mirror again and noticed that upon reaching this area, the trailing vehicles were closing in. They were now less than forty meters behind him.
He picked up the communicator and told the group to speed up, head straight for the mall, and find a place to hide quickly.
After giving the order, Li Xingyue slowed down slightly to give them enough time.
Ten minutes later, Li Xingyue arrived at the mall. He turned on his high beams and saw the four long-haul trucks parked at the entrance from a distance; it seemed they had already found cover.
Checking the rearview mirror again, he saw that the vehicles behind were now tailgating him tightly. Those in the front had already spotted the four trucks and stepped on the gas to overtake Li Xingyue.
As one car shot forward, the others, unwilling to fall behind, followed suit.
With this maneuver, Li Xingyue’s truck found itself surrounded by the pack of cars.
"Damn it, how the hell am I supposed to run!"
By now, he had reached the front of the mall. There were dozens of cars ahead of him and just as many behind. Because it was so dark, the line of vehicles seemed endless.
Li Xingyue picked up the communicator and told the four to find a car, detour to a distant spot, and head back to Starsea City first; he would be a little late.
Liu Yi immediately disagreed, and Liu San tried to persuade him otherwise. Liu San, in fact, wanted to fight them right there, especially since the guns they had purchased a few days ago hadn't been fired yet.
"It’s fine. Have you forgotten that my little brother is well-connected in Starsea City? He has helpers here. Don't worry, I will definitely return safely!"
Li Xingyue managed to talk them into it after much convincing.
Bang, bang, bang!
The driver-side door was suddenly knocked upon. Li Xingyue looked outside and realized that at some point, the car had been surrounded by people, all staring at him.
The person who had knocked was a young man in his twenties, holding a baseball bat.
As soon as Li Xingyue opened the door and jumped out, his shoulders were immediately grabbed.
"Kid, you really found a good spot. You must have made a lot of money today!"
The young man wore a ferocious expression, raising the baseball bat to press it against Li Xingyue’s chin.
Li Xingyue glanced left and right. Everyone was glaring at him with malicious intent, as if they would tear him apart and eat him alive the next second.
He smiled calmly, showing no sign of fear, and looked at the young man. "Brother, with so many of you here, are you really afraid I’ll run away? Can you let go now?"
The young man signaled to his companions, and the two holding Li Xingyue released his arms.
Li Xingyue rubbed his sore arm, pulled a cigarette pack from his pocket, placed one in his mouth, lit it, took a deep drag, and slowly exhaled the smoke.
"Want one?"
Li Xingyue took out another cigarette and offered it to the young man.
Seeing his unshakable composure, the young man looked slightly surprised. He took the cigarette and lit it.
"Alright. To be this calm in such a situation, I respect you as a man."
"Let’s not beat around the bush. Let's be open about this. We heard you brought back a large batch of supplies, and my brothers want a cut. We should all make money together; one shouldn't be too selfish, don't you think, brother?"
Li Xingyue spread his hands. "You’re right. Then just go ahead and move them. The mall is right there."
The young man chuckled. "Brother, you see, there are thousands of brothers here today. That mall won't be enough for all of us. You must have other supply points, right? Don't worry, I promise you'll live if you tell us. That's a very fair deal!"
Li Xingyue was so angry he laughed. What the man said sounded polite, but it was a blatant threat.
"You're overthinking it. I just discovered this place; I haven't started exploring other areas yet, as I'm afraid there might be large hordes of zombies inside."
A boy nearby leaned over to the young man. "Boss, I don't think he's lying."
The young man kicked the boy to the ground, furious. "Damn it, you believe whatever he says? Are you an idiot?"
He turned back to look at Li Xingyue. "Damn it, I tried to be nice, but you won't listen. If you don't talk, I'll blow your head off!"
The young man pulled a pistol from his clothes and pressed it directly against Li Xingyue's forehead.
Bang!
The sound of a car door closing echoed.
Guiye stepped out from the passenger seat and walked to Li Xingyue’s side. "Brother, we're out of cigarettes in the car. I want to smoke."
Li Xingyue didn't know why Guiye suddenly wanted a cigarette. Unlike Xiuluo, he wasn't addicted to smoking.
Li Xingyue took out the cigarette pack and the lighter and handed them to Guiye.
At this moment, everyone around was staring blankly at Guiye, clearly stunned by his handsome face. After all, they never saw someone of his caliber.
The girls, in particular, were staring intently, their faces filled with infatuation. Some even unconsciously took a few steps forward, as if they might pounce on him the next second.
The young man was the first to snap out of it. Seeing the girls in his team looking so enamored, he felt humiliated and angry. He turned the gun to point at Guiye. "Who the hell told you to speak!"
Guiye took a puff of his cigarette and tilted his head to look at the young man.
The moment their eyes met, the young man felt as if he were being stared at by a ferocious beast. Fear filled his heart, and his body trembled involuntarily.
Fortunately, Guiye lowered his head after less than two seconds.
The young man finally regained his composure, gasping for air and wiping the cold sweat from his forehead.
How could his gaze be so terrifying? Is this what they call killing intent? No, impossible. He looks so young; he doesn't look like someone who has killed many people.
Seeing the young man's deathly pale face and his constant muttering, a team member hesitated before walking over. "Cap... Captain, what's wrong with you?"
