Chapter 19: The Final Mission of the Gray Mist Walker
Transcendent power: a force that had never been truly verified in Shen Yu’s world! It existed only in legends, myths, or the occasional peculiar phenomenon occurring in obscure corners. Yet, at this moment, it appeared before them with such clarity.
It was not just Cai Xu, who was desperate to find a solution to the monsters, but even Huang Jingrong beside him who seemed, at this instant, to have gained a more profound understanding of the "multidimensional" concept. This concept seemed to exist for the sole purpose of shattering everything deemed "impossible."
However, Shen Yu did not continue to demonstrate.
"Even if these monsters are truly related to transcendent power, it does not necessarily mean that transcendent power is required to solve them," Shen Yu said. "It won't be too late to study martial arts once I have established an alliance with the member from the martial arts world. For now, let me have the live specimen of the Ocular Worm; let’s see if there is any way to deal with it from the interstellar world’s perspective."
"Right," Huang Jingrong replied, snapping back to reality. "The order to retrieve the live Ocular Worm should have already been delivered."
"I have already sent people to escort it here." Although Cai Xu felt a hint of regret, he knew his priorities. Curious, he asked, "Consultant Shen, you haven't been in contact with transcendent martial arts for very long, have you? To achieve the effect you just demonstrated, is there some sort of shortcut? Like the heaven-sent treasures found in old martial arts novels?"
It was truly bizarre for a top biological scientist to be inquiring about the cultivation methods of transcendent martial arts in such a setting, but from the look on Cai Xu’s face, he was being entirely serious. If a thing existed, it had a principle behind it. A scientist was, by definition, someone who constantly sought the underlying principles of unknown phenomena.
"Grey Mist Walkers are special," Shen Yu explained. "As far as I know, through normal processes, it would take at least several years to reach the level I am at now, and that is only for the very few geniuses capable of such efficiency. The very existence of a Grey Mist Walker defies convention and possesses many miraculous qualities—I have only practiced on this path of martial arts for a single night."
Huang Jingrong memorized these words firmly. Both the martial arts just displayed and this statement from Shen Yu were bound to have far-reaching implications. Everything began with the man standing before them. Even now, it felt somewhat surreal.
"Therefore, you need not worry about my safety, nor do you need to arrange guards for me," Shen Yu said, looking at Huang Jingrong again. "I am likely the safest person in this world. If, one day, our civilization truly perishes, I will carry all the heritage, history, and records of this civilization and wander through other apocalypses, becoming the gravekeeper of a civilization until death. This is the final mission of a Grey Mist Messenger."
Indeed, this was the true thought in Shen Yu’s heart. Even though he maintained an optimistic attitude toward the future, he could not guarantee that he would be able to save this civilization.
If that day were to come, and the entire world and civilization were to be completely destroyed, then the "Gravekeeper of Civilization" would likely be his subsequent identity. He would record everything within this civilization that could be recorded. At the very least, he and the many other versions of Shen Yu would not forget this civilization.
At this moment, everyone present fell silent. Although Shen Yu claimed to be the safest person in the world, they did not see any joy on his face. The safety of being alone, much like the longevity of being alone, was sometimes a curse.
"We will not let that day come to pass," Huang Jingrong said, finally making the most solemn promise on behalf of himself and the countless people behind him. "Our civilization will continue to exist!"
"That is also what we are doing our utmost to achieve right now," Shen Yu nodded slightly.
Just then, a squad of heavily armed soldiers arrived, escorting a black portable security case. Inside the case was the live Ocular Worm that Shen Yu needed. It was finally in his hands!
"We used high-strength, opaque metallic materials for the main containment, while retaining air vents," Cai Xu said after inspecting the case—specifically the serial numbers on the three black canisters inside—and handing it over to Shen Yu. "Consultant Shen, I leave it to you."
What he had just handed over was the heavy burden that had been torturing him for some time. Yet, his mood was not one of relief, but rather filled with bitterness, as it also proved his own helplessness.
Shen Yu reached out to take it, looked at the people around him, and said, "Thank you all for your efforts. Now, wait for my good news."
As he spoke, he did not waste a second; his figure vanished right before their eyes into a swirl of grey mist.
Inside the Grey Mist Space, the Interstellar Shen Yu had already been waiting. "Is the Ocular Worm in there?" he asked, looking at the case in Shen Yu’s hand with a flicker of eagerness. In the original world, this thing was a massive threat, but in his world, it might become an asset!
Normally, such a life form would die upon entering the space, but it could be solved by consuming the Grey Mist! The degree of consumption seemed to correlate with volume and intelligence; the size and intelligence of the Ocular Worm were still within an acceptable range.
"How are things prepared on your end?" Shen Yu asked.
The Interstellar Shen Yu had arrived at the Grey Mist Space early, not just to wait for Shen Yu, but to make preparations for his own world. Truth be told, it was even more difficult than what Shen Yu was doing in the human civilization.
In the interstellar world, everyone had a chip implanted in their brain; as long as they wished, everything they saw and did was recorded, making it difficult to fabricate events. Under these circumstances, there was only one way to fabricate the existence of the "Multidimensional Apocalypse Civilization Mutual Aid Association": by utilizing the omnipotent Grey Mist.
The Interstellar Shen Yu had been doing exactly that just moments ago. Coupled with the emergency Grey Mist Shen Yu had prepared for them, there was not much left in the Grey Mist Space. Whether for the sake of reality or for development, they urgently needed to produce results to replenish the Grey Mist!
"Don't worry, I know my world quite well," the Interstellar Shen Yu said as he took the portable case. "The amount of Grey Mist required to fabricate some memory programs isn't much. Where I really use it is in automatically perfecting the details and logic. Just wait for my good news; it won't take long."
"Good!" Shen Yu could see the confidence in the Interstellar Shen Yu, and the pressure in his heart eased significantly. He knew himself well enough to know that he wouldn't say such things if he weren't certain.
To be honest, in Shen Yu’s view, the three types of monsters his world was currently facing should not pose too much of a difficulty in the eyes of an interstellar civilization. It would all depend on how much support the Interstellar Shen Yu could garner!
At that moment, the Interstellar Shen Yu took a slow, deep breath and vanished from the Grey Mist Space. When he reappeared, he was in a room. The room was simple and tidy; there was no visible light source, yet the entire space emitted a soft, gentle glow.
