Chapter Thirty-One: Not Quite Symmetrical
"What the hell? Why is there a camp set up ahead? Was this here in my past life?" Pei Siying supported the frail Zhang Min with one hand, while using the other to shield her eyes from the scorching sun as she moved forward with effort.
Sweat trickled down her taut jawline, and her hand ached from holding Zhang Min for so long.
Zhang Min shook her head weakly; her lips were pale and cracked from a lack of water.
"I... I remember there being no base in this area. Not even a small camp," she rasped, her voice low and hoarse.
"Shall we take a look?" Pei Siying draped Zhang Min’s arm over her shoulder and stumbled forward. "There are people over there; we might be able to rest for a while."
"No... something’s wrong." She gripped Pei Siying’s hand. Pei Siying’s skin was burning hot, like a small sun. "Cough, cough... isn’t there a prison around here?"
Yu Niaoniao, who had been silent behind them, widened her eyes.
Pei Siying’s brow furrowed: "Someone is coming out."
All three froze.
In the distance, the camp’s fence rattled, and two men with cigarettes dangling from their lips sauntered out.
The road under the blazing sun was completely exposed; they were like insects trapped in a glass jar, with nowhere to hide.
Pei Siying let out a low growl: "Hide." With veins bulging on her hands, she scooped Zhang Min up into her arms.
Although all three were ability users, Zhang Min’s energy was depleted, and Yu Niaoniao was merely a water-type support—or at least, that was the case at Level One.
Currently, she was the only one with any offensive power, and since they didn't know how many people the opposition had, the best strategy was to run.
If Li Luyan were here, she would have dealt with them easily; after all, she was a Tier 2 mental-type user, not to mention her "Devour" ability.
A dark shadow flashed across Pei Siying’s eyes. Why had she thought of that madwoman?
Inside the camp.
Old Huangya hooked his arm around Old Zhou’s shoulder, leaned in, and fawned, "Old Zhou, there are three young chicks outside. I’ve already sent men to grab them."
"How about I give these three to you tonight, if you let my sister go?"
Old Zhou raised the back of his hand and tapped Old Huangya’s jowly, fleshy face, laughing, "What? Can't I have all four?"
Old Huangya’s smile faltered for a moment, but he quickly curled his thick lips and said, "Of course you can, of course you can."
Pei Siying laid Zhang Min gently on the ground and looked at the men approaching them, her beautiful fox-like eyes narrowing.
She let out a cold snort.
This only caused the greasy men to let out lewd laughs. They rubbed their hands together like flies, their gazes raking over her from head to toe.
They stopped on Pei Siying’s prominent chest, their eyes turning scorching hot, like a pack of starving wolves spotting a delicious lamb.
"A beauty with a temper, heh heh..." the man with dyed green hair let out a disgusting cackle.
"These chicks tonight belong to Boss Zhou."
"Oh, I know, I know. Once he’s done with them, I’ll—"
Before the green-haired man could finish, an ice spike pierced his throat. Blood sprayed out instantly, splashing onto the face of the man with pink hair beside him.
Pei Siying hadn't even lowered her hand, which was still wreathed in a chilling mist.
The pink-haired man was stunned, frozen in terror. He usually just collected protection money or bullied elementary school kids; he had never seen such a scene before.
This was real murder, and he was covered in blood.
"Ab... ability user." He stammered and tried to back away.
But Pei Siying wouldn't give him the chance. She manipulated invisible ice blades, and silver light flashed across the path where the green-haired man was retreating.
"Ah!" He tumbled to the ground like a clown, clutching his bleeding foot and howling. "You bitch, ah... damn it!"
"Brothers, get her!"
Pei Siying watched with amusement as the man’s face twisted in agony. She hadn't expected these ordinary people to be foolish enough to go head-to-head with an ability user.
...
In the camp, Old Huangya was losing his patience. He took another drag of his cigarette: "Why aren't they back yet? They're so slow."
His subordinate, kneeling carefully beside him, couldn't help but chime in, "Boss, do you think those guys are just... taking care of business out there?"
Old Huangya widened his murky eyes: "What!" As he spoke, he stubbed his cigarette butt hard into the hand resting on his shoulder.
The man behind him groaned but didn't dare move his hand.
"If that old bastard finds out, we’re all dead."
The subordinate fawned, "Boss, isn't that guy Zhou just one person? Why are we afraid of him with so many brothers?"
"Idiot!" Old Huangya kicked the table in front of him. The screech of the table against the floor made the subordinate jump.
Old Huangya continued, "That old bastard is an ability user. How are us ordinary people supposed to beat him!"
...
Yu Niaoniao’s machete slashed across the last man, and disgusting blood sprayed onto her face.
"Sister... good sister, you’ve already killed them all, please show mercy." The pink-haired man scurried backward, snot and tears smearing his face. A few tufts of pink hair were plastered to his forehead, making him look like a dog caught in the rain.
Pei Siying crouched down in front of him, grabbed his garish pink hair, and forced him to look at her.
"Old bastard, who are you calling 'sister'?"
"Did I give you a chance? You had to come crawling here yourself."
She raised her hand, but frowned in disgust at the snot covering his face.
"Niaoniao," she said lazily, waving her hand.
A rustling sound of clothing came from behind.
Yu Niaoniao had been squatting by a corpse, nimbly searching for spoils. Hearing Pei Siying’s call, she wiped the blood from her face and stood up, dripping machete in hand.
"What is it, Siying?"
"Use some water. Wash his filthy face."
Pei Siying snorted, let go of his hair, and shoved him hard onto the ground. She looked down at him with a cold smirk; his foot was injured anyway, so he couldn't run.
Yu Niaoniao raised her hand, and a stream of clear water flowed from her fingertips, drenching the pink-haired man. He was soaked to the bone.
He gaped at Yu Niaoniao in terror, bracing himself with his hands, his voice trembling: "Ab... ability user? Two ability users?!"
"The face is clean now." Pei Siying grabbed his hair again and hauled his head up.
"It hurts, it hurts..." The pink-haired man’s face contorted, deep furrows appearing on his forehead.
Pei Siying raised her other hand, and under his terrified gaze:
*Slap!*
*Slap!*
*Slap!*
The right side of the man’s face puffed up as if it were being inflated, making his forced-shut right eye look pathetic.
Pei Siying lowered her stinging palm and lifted his head again, staring at her masterpiece with satisfaction.
Her red lips parted: "Not symmetrical enough."
With that, she let go of his hair.
