Chapter 20: The City Fire Squad

Hearing the doctor mention conditions, Lu Xiao was not surprised. Even someone like the prison doctor stayed quietly within this containment facility, which made Lu Xiao find the place increasingly inscrutable. Moreover, he had never intended to engage in any direct conflict with humans. After all, before falling into the dark prison, he had been a model citizen with a five-star reputation.
“Doctor! What conditions do you have? Just say it!” Lu Xiao urged.
The doctor adjusted his monocle and said, “I need a large amount of your flesh and blood.”
Lu Xiao was momentarily stunned.
The doctor thought he might have asked too much and was about to retract his words, but Lu Xiao asked in return, “Doctor, when you say a large amount, how much exactly?”
He gestured on his own body.
The doctor twitched the corner of his mouth. “Not that much. About this much.” He also made a bowl shape with his hands. “Mainly blood.”
The doctor had confirmed that, compared to flesh, Lu Xiao’s blood caused the most damage to these strange entities. Coating bullets with his blood allowed even an ordinary person like the doctor to kill the S077-Butler with a single shot—though that was only because the doctor had aimed the gun at the butler’s forehead. Normally, these eerie creatures wouldn’t just stand still and let you shoot; some even moved faster than bullets.
“You want my blood?” Lu Xiao rubbed his chin.
“Would five liters be enough? I won’t have more than that!” Lu Xiao offered.
The doctor shook his head again. “Even if you give me more blood, it will eventually run out. I plan to extract some of your hematopoietic stem cells.”
His plan was to cultivate Lu Xiao’s stem cells to artificially produce blood. While the effect might be diminished, it would be sufficient.
Lu Xiao was familiar with the term but had no idea how to extract them. He patted his chest. “Go ahead, sir! Use as much as you need!”
...
When Lu Xiao emerged from the operating room, his face was somewhat pale. The doctor was ruthless and took most of it directly from him. Fortunately, Lu Xiao’s recovery was strong, so there was no lasting harm—only temporary weakness.
The doctor patted his shoulder. “When there’s a mission that requires you, I’ll notify you.”
...
Magic City.

A luxurious mansion.
Countless burly men in black suits stood in the garden, all wearing black sunglasses. At the end of the sunglasses’ arms extended small microphones.
“Brothers! We’ve received news that someone will attempt to rob the mansion tonight!”
“All units, prepare for combat!”
The voice came through their sunglasses. At their waists, something protruded, resembling a holstered firearm.
In the deepest room of the mansion, a middle-aged man wearing a thick gold necklace faced an old-fashioned, ornately framed mirror. His hands rested on his stomach, and the high-end custom white shirt he wore was soaked with sweat.
“Magic mirror, magic mirror! I want to know how many are coming tonight.”
A human face appeared on the mirror’s surface. It looked disdainfully at the middle-aged man.
“What will you offer in exchange for the answer?”
“Don’t try to fool me with that filthy flesh and blood from before! I need pure flesh and blood—pure, do you understand?”
If an outsider saw a mirror talk, they might have had a heart attack on the spot. But the middle-aged man seemed accustomed to it.
He clapped his hands.
The door opened, and two black-suited bodyguards dragged a girl inside. She wore a blue and white striped school uniform, her face pale and clearly shaken.
The middle-aged man waved his hand, and the bodyguards immediately left. The girl’s hands and feet were bound, and her mouth gagged.
The man grabbed her hair and pulled her in front of the mirror.
“Magic mirror, magic mirror! Are you satisfied with this sacrifice?”
He smiled broadly at the mirror.
The face in the mirror twitched its nose. “Hmm? Not bad! This is pure flesh and blood!”
Its mouth split to the ears, revealing a gaping maw.
The girl stared in terror, struggling desperately but tied too tightly.
The middle-aged man turned away, wiping sweat from his brow—not out of fear, but because the earlier exertion had made him sweat.
A chilling sound came from behind him—like rodents gnashing their teeth.
About five minutes later, the sound returned.
“Still seven people! Tell your bodyguards to watch the sewers!”
Hearing the mirror’s answer, the middle-aged man nodded and took out a communicator.

“Still seven people, and they might come through the sewers. Be alert!”
“After tonight, I’ll give the brothers a bonus tomorrow!”
“Thanks for your hard work!”
His words echoed in the ears of all the bodyguards throughout the mansion.
Those words caused many to breathe more heavily.
“Boss Liu is really a good man!” one bodyguard whispered.
“Yeah! Sixty thousand a day—probably better pay than any bodyguard in the whole country!”
“If I keep this up for another week, I’ll have enough to buy a house in Magic City!”
“What kind of business does Boss Liu run? Why do people keep trying to rob him?”
“Just do your job. Don’t ask what you shouldn’t.”
The bodyguards chatted quietly. They weren’t too concerned about the robbery attempts—they happened so often. Each time, they managed to repel the attackers.
Boss Liu was said to be the richest man in Magic City. Ninety percent of the city’s businesses bore his shadow.
And every time after an attack, Boss Liu handed out bonuses—sometimes fifty thousand, sometimes a hundred thousand.
There were at least a hundred bodyguards like these in the mansion.
Meanwhile, in the mansion’s sewers, a six-person special operations team crawled forward through the narrow tunnels.
“Captain! Is this really effective?” one asked. “The target has omniscient abilities!”
“If we go through the sewers, it will definitely know!” another said.
The captain replied solemnly, “Where else can you go that it won’t know? The sewers offer less exposure and are easier to defend!”
“If they throw a grenade, tsk tI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
