Chapter 99: Mixed Reviews

Some people joined the Qing Gang because they believed that with so many members, no one would dare to provoke them, allowing them to live peaceful lives. Bullying smaller gangs was acceptable, but the Baisha Gang was also a large, well-established organization with a long-standing reputation. Its leader, Li Xiangqun, was notorious for his ruthlessness—he would sever a finger and kill an entire family without hesitation. His strength lay in his cold-blooded cruelty and fearsome reputation. Although he had few top fighters under his command, each was exceptional, especially Duan Yuanqing, the master of twin blades, who was one of the most formidable figures in the underground forces of South City.
This battle’s outcome was uncertain. If the newly formed Qing Gang were wiped out, it would be difficult to survive in the underworld thereafter. Some immediately felt regret, but the rules of the underworld made it hard to quit a gang once joined.
Dao Bailiu observed everyone’s expressions carefully, instantly discerning who could be of great use and who was only fit for minor roles.
“Boss, may I ask about the strength of the Baisha Gang? How should we attack?” a man stepped forward. Dao Bailiu recognized him as Lu Wen, known as the ‘Cloud-Flipping Hand’. He had thick eyebrows, big eyes, and a sturdy build.
Lu Wen was a close friend of Shan Youxin, with cultivation not inferior to Shan’s. He was bold and carefree but calm and composed, never impulsive. Disliking gang politics, he had always worked solo as a mercenary. This time, after many invitations and repeated assurances from Shan Youxin that the Qing Gang was different from others, Lu Wen reluctantly joined.
Dao Bailiu said, “According to intelligence gathered by Qing Gang brothers, the Baisha Gang has just over five hundred members—not enough to fear. Our Qing Gang also has over five hundred, and though newly founded, we have no distractions and focus solely on training. With careful planning, we estimate a fifty percent chance of victory. Moreover, Elder Shan has recently allied with several small gangs. Though many refuse to join, they’re willing to assist in battle, bringing our total to more than six hundred.”
Voices rose in discussion, “We have the numerical advantage; victory is very likely.”
“Brothers, if you think we can openly challenge the Baisha Gang with six hundred men, you’re mistaken,” Dao Bailiu said.
The crowd was puzzled. He continued, “Apart from the eight major gangs in South City, the Qing Gang is the strongest. But we lack seniority and reputation. If we openly challenge the Baisha Gang, we challenge the authority of the eight old gangs, which will upset many. The relationships among the eight are complex, with territories divided and alliances or enmities known only to insiders. It’s inevitable that other gangs will intervene.”
Everyone nodded in agreement.
“Secondly, even if we win, we will suffer heavy losses. Other gangs may exploit our weakened state and gain from our efforts. ThereforeI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
