Chapter 21: Kill Him

Ogg led Nyx and the others winding through the ruined town, entering a house with a small courtyard. At the corner of the courtyard wall, he pulled out a water pipe.
He turned on the faucet atop the pipe, and clear water flowed out with a gurgling sound.
Nyx sniffed the water, “Not contaminated?”
Ogg replied, “This water comes from outside the contaminated zone. It hasn’t been polluted yet.”
Nyx took a tubular device from his pocket to test the water quality. Within seconds, the result confirmed the water was clean.
He asked Ogg, “How did you know there was still clean water here?”
The land and water sources in the contaminated zone were the first to be polluted; finding clean water was extremely difficult.
Ogg turned off the faucet. “I tapped into it. Before coming in, I dug a pipe from the logistic water tank in the rear and buried it here. I have to say, you guys are way too honest, relying on others for everything. Sooner or later, you’ll get betrayed by your own people.”
Though they were on the outskirts of the contaminated zone, the nearest human settlement was still hundreds of kilometers away. If Ogg wanted clean water, he had to draw it from the temporary residential area in the rear.
This task took considerable effort—avoiding the attention of the rear personnel and understanding the underground water pipe layout beneath the town to access clean water.
Compared with sentinels like Nyx who only followed orders and arrangements, sentinels like Ogg, who were not part of the official sentinel system, considered much more.
Before each mission into the contaminated zone, Ogg would always study the structural maps of the area thoroughly.
He had never been a formal soldier. Rising from the bottom, he never fully trusted the Federation—he only trusted himself.
Nyx thought Ogg was indeed a bit clever but disagreed with his views. Their stances differed: as a mercenary paid to complete tasks, Ogg had no convictions.
While the Federation did have its corrupt and rotten elements, a few bad apples did not represent the entire Federation.
If even the foundational military system could not be trusted, the Federation was bound to face major problems. At that point, they had nothing reliable left.
Nyx walked around the house and noticed a bathtub in the bathroom. He dragged the water pipe inside and filled the tub.
Before notifying Holin to bring Yu Xia over, Nyx warned Ogg, “Besides you, no one else is allowed to know there’s a guide here, or I’ll kill you immediately.”
Ogg raised his hands innocently. “I didn’t tell anyone, but if they find out on their own, that’s not my fault. After all, you guys really don’t hide things well.”
Nyx ignored him and ordered his team to notify Holin to bring Yu Xia over.
Ogg was just trying to talk his way out.
How could they not hide well?
Among so many frenzied sentinels, hiding a guide without detection was already extremely covert.
Page 2/3
Only they failed to guard against this bastard Ogg.
When they met halfway before, Ogg had already caught suspicious scents. Now with Yu Xia’s psychic energy emanating again, his first thought was of them.
He could track Yu Xia’s scent to find her.
When Holin and the others transferred Yu Xia, she had not yet regained consciousness.
After a guide’s psychic energy is exhausted, their consciousness hides within their mental landscape to recover.
No one knew what Yu Xia’s mental landscape looked like; it was beyond their reach.
A guide’s mental landscape was different from a sentinel’s—it had an extra layer of “defense walls.” Some guides, when suffering severe psychic damage, would become deeply trapped within their mental landscapes.
At that time, outsiders could not probe their consciousness, and they themselves could not escape easily, often confusing reality with their mental visions.
Now, the White Tower could assist guides in opening their mental landscapes via instruments and the comfort of higher-level guides.
But the nearest White Tower was tens of light-years away.
In the past, Deman Planet was an S-class world with a White Tower, but after the contaminated zone formed, all guides relocated, and the White Tower was long abandoned.
Now, they could only pray that Yu Xia’s mind remained unharmed.
Holin carried Yu Xia into the room and immediately saw Ogg tied up on one side.
The shackles binding him were made of special military-grade materials, difficult even for sentinels to break free from.
These were commonly carried by Nyx, previously used to restrain the volatile Baru.
Ogg cursed as they entered. “Damn it! Are you Federation scum? You stole my stuff, you got the water, and this is how you treat me? Use me up and kick me aside?”
Nyx squatted before him and slapped his face. “I’m a wolf; you’re the dog. You bastard, consider yourself lucky I haven’t killed you yet. Don’t think we don’t know what you’re thinking—behave.”
He wouldn’t so easily trust Ogg not to tell other sentinels; only by controlling him could he feel secure.
Ogg looked at the little guide in Holin’s arms and bared his teeth in a canine grin. “You don’t think tying me up will trap me, do you?”
He then summoned his spirit form.
A huge black Alaskan Malamute appeared, fierce and attempting to break out of the room.
Nyx was prepared. He summoned his own spirit form, a vibrant snow wolf, easily matching the A+ sentinel’s spirit form.
Besides Baru, the other sentinels’ spirit forms also gathered, all fixated on Ogg.

With so many sentinels’ spirit forms, even if Ogg wanted to escape, he couldn’t get out of this room.
The Alaskan Malamute snarled at the snow wolf, then fell back quietly beside Ogg.
Ogg said, “Let me send a message to my comrades. They’ll smell my scent and come looking since I haven’t returned for so long.”
Nyx twirled his military knife, “Then good luck to them. If they come here, no one will blame us for killing them. Everyone’s about to go feral anyway.”
Ogg grumbled, “Damn the Federation army, truly despicable.”
Nyx traced the knife across his face, “You’re the damned one, you bastard.”
Holin, holding Yu Xia, entered the bathroom without looking back and said, “Kill him. Fewer problems that way.”
Ogg exclaimed, “Holin, you son of a—” but Nyx muffled his mouth with a rag before he could finish.
Nyx lit a cigarette and grinned slyly, “Bastard, you chose the wrong people to mess with.”
Back in military school, he and Holin were rated the two biggest “bad dogs” in their class—one too ruthless to want to face in combat, the other constantly insulted for being too doglike.
Nyx always took insults as praise but disliked being grouped with dogs. His spirit form was handsome—how could he be compared with a bunch of mutts?
In the bathroom:
“The water’s too cold.”
Holin tested the tub’s water temperature and said to Nyx.
The temperature had dropped below zero. Even if Yu Xia had now mutated into a mermaid, soaking in this water for long would make her sick.
Nyx scratched his messy silver-gray hair. “Forgot about that. Let me think...”
“I got it. Baru.”
Nyx called Baru over, grasped his shoulders, and pushed him toward the tub’s edge. “Here, I have a task for you—heat the bathwater.”
Baru’s spirit form was a fire dragon, able to raise his body temperature to the heat of flames.
Baru seemed imbued with a great mission, cautiously summoning his spirit form, shrinking to the size of a kitten, and with a splash jumped into the bathtub.
